IHSA SOFTBALL: Defending Champs Edge Elverado

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ An RBI single by Kayla Quetermous in the home half of the 11th inning kept defending Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Class 1A State Champion Cobden's chances for a title repeat late Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Appleknockers (29-4) edged Elverado 2-1 to win the Campbell Hill (Trico) Sectional title and a return spot in the Elite Eight.

Monday at 4:30, Cobden faces top-rated Toledo-Cumberland in the Carbondale Super-Sectional at West Stadium.

Elverado's season ends at 17-9.

"These girls had an awesome season," Lady Falcons coach Donette Wheatley said. "There's no hanging heads after this one. I don't think they expected a game from us, really. And we came out and certainly gave them one. The breaks just didn't go our way."
