Steve Rodewald brought up the issue of sewage backup because of the damage that has been brought to his home twice in the last 13 months. Rodewald said that he had no problems with water damage in his basement for the previous 22 years up until the last 13 months. He said that he has lost approximately $1,000 worth of personal stuff and has had to take 8 truckloads of things to dump, not all of which are replaceable. Rodewald also said that he has picked up a smell of diesel fuel as well as oil in the sewage. Rodewald said that he can not afford to go through this again and was wondering if the city could do anything about it.
Mayor Mike Armstrong said that they still do not know for sure where the smell of the diesel fuel is coming from. He also brought up that the back up is not just at Rodewald's, but there are several other places that got backed up this last May. Mayor Armstrong and Project Coordinator Alan Dyke both touched on the fact that different parts of the sewer line on Illinois Street were replaced in 2003 and 2005 in an effort to stop the sewage backup. Dyke empathized with Rodewald saying that it is hard to prepare for the 3.75 inches of rain in three hours that they got on May 8. Dyke said that they pumped water for about 16 hours from May 8 - 9. The city is continuing to look into the issue to see what all they can do.
In other news from Monday night, the 2009 Pig Party was deemed a success by Kurt Jeffers. It was so successful that the Pig Party donated $1,000 back to the Steeleville Improvement Association. The donation was accepted by Mayor Armstrong on behalf of the association. Jeffers said that this was the best prepared they have been despite a slight weather issue on Friday. Jeffers said that they lost a majority of their crowd Friday night because of the weather. He said that Steeleville's Pig Party was one of the few Pig Parties with an increase in teams. He said that overall the teams were impressed with Steeleville, and the overall champion from Nashville, TN already reserved a spot for next year. From what he has heard, Jeffers said that the local businesses did very well. Jeffers said that they do plan to make a few changes for next year in order to create a more family feel on Saturday.
In other news, the board approved the renewal of the liquor license for local businesses.
Cruise Night will be held on July 11 from 5:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. The board approved to donate $250, the same as last year, for attendance prizes for Cruise Night.
It was also brought up that some tombstones at Paradise Cemetery are too shallow and have started to tilt. It is possible that the possibility of going 24 inches deep will be an ordinance in next months meeting.
In other notes, the senior site board said that a total of 1,016 meals were served, averaging about 50 meals a day. Also, the Older American Month was a success in May.
