Student demand brings new course sections to SWIC campus

"We have added another section of MATH 94 at the campus to allow additional students to enroll in a day class. The three previously scheduled sections reached maximum enrollment," notes Math and Sciences Division Dean Amanda Starkey.

The new daytime section, MATH 94-084 Basic Algebra, will meet from 11 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, from Aug. 24 to Dec. 14. The class is an introductory course in algebra.

In addition to the new section of MATH 94, the campus will see the addition of another section of SOC 153 Introductory Sociology.

"Our first section of the course filled quickly, but we knew additional students wanted to register for the course," notes Counselor Suzy Jones. "I took the student interest to the provost and by working with the Instructional division, the campus was able to add a second section to meet the need."

The course is an introduction to the field of sociology, which is the study of human behavior. Students study topics including socialization, group dynamics, social roles and deviance. They will discuss these subjects in relation to key social institutions including families, education, religion and economy.

The new section, SOC 153-081, will meet from 12:30-1:45 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 25 to Dec. 17.

An adjustment will be made to the campus' evening schedule as well. ENG 91 Basic Reading and ENG 92 Intermediate Reading will split. ENG 91 will meet Mondays and ENG 92 will meet Wednesdays. Both classes will meet from 7-9 p.m., from Aug. 25-Dec. 15.

"Traditionally, these two classes have met together. This semester, demand for each course has increased and we will be able to separate them to serve more evening students," notes Red Bud Campus Provost Mike Reed.

For additional information about these additions and adjustments to the fall schedule, contact a Red Bud Campus counselor at 618-282-6682, ext. 8114.

Fall 2009 Semester classes begin Saturday, Aug. 22. To register, visit the campus, located at 500 W. South Fourth St., from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Fridays, this summer. Special Saturday Registrations will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 15 and Aug. 22.
