Late Comeback Bid Falls Short For Panthers
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ After falling into a 33-7 hole at halftime, Pinckneyville almost completed an impossible comeback against Red Bud, scoring 22 unanswered points in the second half but falling short on two late chances to win the game.
A pass interference call followed by a late hit, both against Red Bud, put the Panthers in position for a 22-yard pass from Bryant Shute to Nathan Morton to cut the lead to four with a little over six minutes to play.
A bad snap on a punt attempt on the Musketeers' next possession gave the Panthers the ball on Red Bud 14-yard line, but the offense was unable to take advantage as Shute was intercepted on fourth-and-long.
Pinckneyville got another chance late, taking over at the Musketeers' 15-yard line with 36 seconds left in the game, but on second down Shute's pass was redirected at the line and intercepted to end the threat.
The Panthers (0-1) travel to West Frankfort in week two.
