Irene finished grade school in 1941, graduated from high school in 1945, and got two years of college before she started emergency teaching at Lower Arm School in 1947-1948. She taught after Mrs. Frieda Heap resigned to take care of her growing family.

She went back to college in 1950-51 and in March 1952 received her bachelor's degree in education. She is one of six children. She and her late husband, Curt, have four children.

A longtime teacher, she also operated the first licensed private nursery school in Perry County.

Some of the teachers at the school were Fred Chapman, Clemintine Kuhnert, Loa B. Runion, Mrs. Frieda Heap, Irene Dixon, Betty Knapp and Martin R. Schroeder.

Three names written in the desk drawer were Irene Dixon, Betty Knapp and Martin Schroeder. All three graduated with the Class of 1945 at the Pinckneyville High School.
