Firemen say Voice was asleep at the time and was awakened by the sound of smoke detectors going off in the house.

The house had quickly filled with smoke, so instead of trying to exit through the front door, Voice exited through a window on the west side of the house. The home is located immediately east of the Perry County Counseling Center on East Jackson Street.

Firemen were quick to knock down the growing fire in the room where the computer center was located.

Ameren IP lineman Stanley Tripp pulled the electric meter on the home to make working in the home safer for firemen.

Voice was taken to Marshall Browning Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Members of the Dowell Fire Department came to Du Quoin to cover the station.

The fire is deemed accidental as firemen continue to try and narrow the cause. Firemen were at the scene for about two hours. The home received some fire damage and heavy smoke damage throughout.
