Girls Prep Basketball: Lady Indians End SIRR Road Drought
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[For the first time since the 2006-2007 season, Du Quoin High School's Girls Basketball team has won a road game in River-to-River Conference play.
Tuesday night, the Lady Indians jumped ahead early and coasted past host Chester 46-37 to even their record in the SIRR's Mississippi Division to 1-1.
Overall, Du Quoin's best season in three years continues to build as the Lady Tribe hiked its overall mark to 6-2.
Thursday, they'll visit Murphysboro.
"I am very proud of these girls and the coaches I work with," Du Quoin coach Shawn File said. "It was very nice to win at all three levels tonight. Our defense was pretty good, especially in the first half."
The Lady Indians were ahead 24-11 by halftime and held a double-digit lead for most of the final two quarters as freshman center Rebekah Maddox led the way with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Jessica Hirsch added nine points to go with seven boards.
Du Quoin's balanced scoring ledger also included six points from Heather Cavins and Keawna Anders. Megi Jones added five and Ashley Ward four. Field goals from Curry Emling, Magen Edwards and Steffanie Gates completed the scoring.
"After a rough first minute or two we played a pretty good first half," File said. "We still need to put together two good half's of basketball. Chester started the game by playing a lot of zone and we took a few quick shots, but then settled down and got some great looks at the basket after a couple of reversals."
Cavins had a monster game in Du Quoin's 43-21 junior varsity triumph. The junior scored a game-high 20 points while hauling in 15 rebounds. Freshman Cassidy Rice had six points, seven assists and seven steals with Nicole Jackson also netting six points.
"Heather Cavins had a big game and the girls did a good job of finding her and getting her the ball," Lady Indian jayvee coach Jason James said. "
Du Quoin (2-1, 1-1) led just 15-14 at halftime before dominating the last two frames.
The Lady Indians also won the freshman , 16-12, as Taylor King scored eight points.
