Girls Prep Basketball: Lady Indians 8-4 as Long Holiday Break Begins
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ Du Quoin High School's girls basketball team ran headlong into the toughest opponent its yet to face in the 2009-2010 campaign Tuesday, losing 67-30 at state-ranked Nashville.
The Lady Indians enter the Christmas break with an 8-4 record and are 1-3 in River-to-River Conference, Mississippi Division play.
They are idle until playing at Herrin January 4.
Nashville (10-2, 4-0) jumped to a 20-9 first quarter lead and was never threatened.
The Lady Indians were down 38-14 and 53-21 at the next two quarter-stops. Rebekah Maddox and Steffanie Gates each led Du Quoin with seven points. Megi Jones added six points.
In Tuesday's preliminary game, the Lady Indians (3-4, 1-3) fell 51-19 against the undefeated Hornettes.
Freshman Taylor King had five points for Du Quoi with Cassidy Rice adding four.
Rice also had five rebounds and three steals.
King added four boards and two steals.
GIRLS HOLIDAY TOURNEY''S
Pinckneyville (9-2) opens play in the Herrin Lady Tigers Holiday Classic Saturday in an 8 p.m. game against Johnston City.
They will also play Cobden, Vienna, Herrin and Carterville.
At the Rangerettes Christmas Classic in Benton-an eight team event with pool play-Elverado (2-9) is entered.
The Lady Falcons start with Carbondale at 12:30 Saturday and will also play Anna-Jonesboro and Hamilton County in pool play.
All eight teams will return to play a final game on trophy day, Dec. 29.
For the second straight year, Du Quoin will be idle and not participate in a holiday break tournament.
