Junior High Roundup: Warriors work overtime against Herrin

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Forced into overtime in each contest, Du Quoin (Middle School) managed to leave Herrin (Junior High School) with a pair of narrow boys basketball wins Tuesday night.

The varsity squad hiked its record to 10-3 with a 45-40 OT win while the seventh graders (12-1) also won in harrowing fashion, 49-44.

Ryan Heape's eighth grade survived 11 turnovers in the final two minutes of regulation play as Spencer Cook posted game-high totals in points (17) and rebounds (13).

Matt Galik and AJ Smith each had seven points with Jason Nelson (six rebounds, five blocks) also providing solid efforts. Camden Mercier led DMS with eight assists and five steals.

The score was knotted 36-36 as regulation play ended.

"I was really proud of our kids," Heape said. "They fought through a short bench and a lot of rust at the foul line. We've just got to continue to work at finishing games off."

Noah Campbell's 18 point and 11 rebound effort paced the young Warriors in Tuesday's preliminary at Mike Sortal Gymnasium.

Will Galik netted 10 points, M. Galik (nine) and Smith eight.

M. Galik handed out six assists with W. Galik posting two steals.

DMS visits Pinckneyville (Junior High School) Thursday.
