Boys Prep Basketball: Weekend losses extend Elverado's skid

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[As the 49th annual Chester Mid-Winter Classic begins Monday night, Elverado High School's boys basketball team is still seeking its first victory.

The Fighting Falcons, 0-14 after weekend losses to Sesser-Valier and Cobden, are slated to play #1 seed New Athens at 6 o'clock to start the tourney.

Friday night, Sesser-Valier improved to 16-1 on the season with an easy, 64-35 win over Elverado at home.

The Devils broke open a close 17-12 game in the second period with a 27-4 run to grab a 44-16 halftime edge.

Justin Matyi had 15 of his team-high 17 points in the first half, for S-V.

Kyle Kempfer led the Falcons with 15. Herby Sandlin added eight points.

In Saturday's battle against Cobden in Piper/Valerius Gymnasium, Elverado trailed just 25-19 after a nip-and-tuck first half.

After the Appleknockers stretched their margin to 10 with the first two buckets of the second half, Elverado used Landry Arnett's three-point play to pull within 29-25 at the five minute mark.

Cobden, however, would quickly respond with back-to-back three-point plays of its own from Rob Lehr and Bo Gearheart to push its lead back to double digits. Elverado would get no closer.

Lehr and Alex Sweitzer each 20 points to pace Cobden, which is coached by Pinckneyville alum Jeff Shillinger.

Kempfer had 18 for Elverado with Daltun Hasty adding 10 points.
