Girls Prep Basketbal: Z-R-C extends Du Quoin's loss skid

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Stacy Holland sank five key free throws down the stretch as Zeigler-Royalton/Christopher escaped Anders Memorial Gymnasium with a thrilling 49-45 victory over Du Quoin's Lady Indians.

After pulling ahead 35-33 on Rebekah Maddox's short jump shot with 4:50 left, the Lady Indians would never trail again.

Now 8-8 overall, Du Quoin has lost five straight times and will visit Trico Monday.

Holland sealed the surprising Z-R-C win with two charity shots at the 19.8 mark. Maddox, who led Du Quoin with 17 points, marked inside to slice the lead back down to one before Holland's final two shots.

Allie Mayer added two more tosses in the final seconds.

In a sluggish first quarter, Z-R-C led 9-0 before Steffanie Gates connected from the perimeter 3 1/2 minutes in.

The Lady Tribe would end the frame trailing just 9-6 and were behind 18-14 at intermission.

A strong start to the final half, which included three hoops from Keawna Anders and two by Maddox, pushed Du Quoin in front 29-25 as the third quarter concluded.

Chelsey Greenwood, one of 14 Lady Tornadoes to see action during the contest, connected from short range to give Z-R-C a lead (37-35) that it would never relinquish.

Holland had 11 points and Alyssa Hall 10 for the Lady Tornadoes. Katie Matyi and Lily Furlow each scored eight.

Anders (12 points, seven rebounds) was the lone Du Quoin player besides Maddox to reach double digits.

Hirsch had nine assists, five points and five steals before fouling out.

In Wednesday's preliminary game, Z-R-C used a strong finish to edge past the Lady Indians, 40-36.

Nicole Jackson topped Du Quoin with 16 points and four steals.

Shelby Presley pulled down nine rebounds with Cassidy Rice, Ashley Ward and Jackson all handing out two assists.

The loss was the fourth of the season for the young Lady Indians by six points or less.

Du Quoin is 5-6.
