St. Marks chose a mission activity called "Hearts for Jesus". They raised money to send to children in Haiti through an organization called Children's Christian Concern Society (CCCS). Students brought pennies on Monday, nickels on Tuesday, dimes on Wednesday, quarters on Thursday and dollars on Friday. The Beta Club collected and counted the donations. They were amazed and excited by the grand total of $1199.91. That should go a long way helping the needy children. During March the school will continue using their chapel offerings to help needy children through the CCCS.
For Kindergarten and Preschool the Bible story for last week was "Jesus Heals a Man" and the class learned how some good friends helped a paralyzed man down through the roof to get him past the crowds to Jesus. Wow! All levels of students celebrated Dr. Suess's birthday by having ice cream. Preschool 3's made rainbow fish for the ocean in the Preschool room, and Preschool 4's made jellyfish, sea stars or sea horses who lodged in the kelp forest. Come and visit our undersea world! Kindergarteners continued their work with the letter "C" by making cupcakes for their A,B,C books. For decoration during National Lutheran Schools Week, the Preschoolers created a rainbow and the Kindergarteners chose some of God's promises and wrote them on raindrop-shaped paper.
First Grade has had an exciting week. The crocus bulbs we planted the first week of November are up and started blooming! We planted them near the trees in the front of school, and on Friday we had 4 yellow and one white crocus blooming. There are more that haven't bloomed yet! We have also been working on a play, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" to present to volunteers and parents. It is fun to get to pretend. We made a display of some of the promises God has made to us to display during Lutheran Schools Week. Each first grader wrote a promise on a heart that is displayed on a board. We also wrote sentences about an animal picture. Come read what we wrote and see if you can tell which animal each of us wrote about. Our work is displayed in the hall. We worked on word pictures, too. These are pictures that use words in the shape of what they mean to make a picture. First grade also talked about how Jesus died for our sins. We have a bulletin board in the hall that says "He Carried Our Sins". Each child wrote down a sin on a piece of brown paper. These papers were put in the shape of a cross. This helps make Jesus' death for our sins more real to the class.
Second Grade has been practicing our subtraction problems that require borrowing. In science we are learning about the moon and in religion we're still talking about miracles. We are continuing to practice our cursive writing, which is difficult but exciting to learn. We have learned the location of 10 of the 50 states. For our "Promises" display, we did word art, using pictures that we found on internet after brainstorming what each letter in the word "promises" could represent.
3rd grade has been reading stories written by Patricia Polacco. She often writes about her childhood or stories from her family. "Chicken Sunday" tells about her friendship with two black neighbors and their desire to buy Grandma Eula an Easter hat. They made pysanky eggs to sell and in the process made friends with a lonely storekeeper. Pysanky eggs are an Ukraine tradition. Don't know what a pysanky egg is? Ask a third grader.
4th grade has been writing poetry. They wrote some limericks. Limericks have 5 lines. The 1st, 2nd, and 5th lines rhyme. The 3rd and 4th rhyme.
There once was a girl named Mary
Who loved to eat cherries
They tasted delish
Like a grilled fish
She got them from a joker named Larry. By Hailey
There once was a girl named Pat
She found a greem cat
The cat ran away
The girl went to Bombay
Finally Pat got her cat. By Makenzie
There once was a man named Pat
Who chased a rainbow hat
He hit a rake
He sat on a snake
And he finally caught that hat. By Noah
Fifth Grade took their first ever online quiz for literature class in the computer lab. They completed their chapter on the beginning of the American Revolution and had a successful test. The class also had fun doing a science lab on water evaporation.
Do you drink Coca Cola products? From March 12-29 the Seventh Grade class will be selling coke products (including flavored water, powerade, lemonade and iced tea) to continue raising money for their class trip to Washington, D.C. next year.
