According to Randolph County Coroner Randy Dudenbostel, the gunshot wound appears to be self inflicted. There was no note, Dudenbostel said.

"It doesn't seem like foul play at this time," Dudenbostel added. The death is being investigated by the coroner's office, as well as the Randolph County Sheriff and the Illinois State Police.

Schilling was born December 12, 1949 in St. Louis, Missouri. He married in 1974. His wife Nancy served Evansville as village clerk for 20 years. The couple had two children and three grandchildren.

Danny Schilling was retired, having worked at Chester Mental Health Center. He served in the Marine Corp. in Vietnam, and was an officer at Evansville American Legion Post 1172.

Schilling was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:15 p.m.
