CHS Softball gets first win of the season at Shawnee, 7-3
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The Lady Jackets were short-gamed at Marissa, 11-0 in five innings Wednesday, March 24. Marissa is a perennial powerhouse and had already played several games in the early season. It was only the second outing for Chester.
Marissa jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Marissa added one more run in the second inning and three apiece in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Lady Meteors shut out Chester.
Ashley Lehman got the win for Marissa while freshman Taylor Gross took the loss for CHS. For the Jackets Ashley Andrews went 1-for-2 and Taylor Gross went 1-for-2. Marissa's Pitchford went 3-for-4 with a triple to pace the Meteors. With the loss Chester fell to 0-2 for the season.
CHS gets first win of 2010 at Shawnee, 7-3
Monday, March 29 the Lady Jackets got their first win of 2010 at Shawnee with a nice, 7-3 win. Chester led 2-1 after one inning and added another run in the top of the second as Ashley Lindsay scored on hits by Mollie Laramore and Megan Atchison.
In the top of the fourth CHS scored another two runs by Megan Atchison and Morgan Colvis. Both arrived on base on base hits and were moved around the horn on hits by Ashley Andrews who got a double and Taylor gross who got a base hit.
The Jackets were not through; however, as they added two more runs again in the top of the sixth inning. Mollie Laramore reached base on a base hit and Megan Atchison arrived at first on a walk. The two then scored on an Ashley Andrews double.
Morgan Colvis was the winning pitcher for Chester while M. organ got the loss for Shawnee. Colvis had 12 strike-outs in the win as Chester improved to 1-2 for the season.
Gibault holds off Chester, 6-4, in extra innings
The Lady Jackets fought a hard battle at Waterloo Gibault Tuesday, March 30, but lost in the end in extra innings, 6-4. Gibault led 1-0 after the first inning, but the Jackets stormed back in the top of the second with four runs to take a 4-1 lead.
Chester went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first, but got hot in the top of the second after Ashley Andrews reached base on a walk. Taylor gross moved Andrews around on a fielder's choice and Rachel Sheely also reached base on balls. Crum and Laramore smashed base hits to score Andrews, Gross, Sheely and Lauren Hoops.
It was a defensive battle for the next three innings as both teams went down, 1-2-3, but in the bottom of the 6th inning Gibault broke loose with two runs on five hits and the Lady Hawks trailed by only one run, 4-3, going into the seventh and final inning.
In the top of the seventh the Jackets went down in order as Taylor Crum, Mollie Laramore and Megan Atchison all struck out. Chester was still ahead, though, and all they had to do was hold the Hawks and the victory was theirs.
Gibault had the top of their order at bat and K. Barbeau led off with a base hit followed by A. Crouch who knocked a double to score Barbeau. The result of this offensive flurry was one run scored and Gibault tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning and sent the game into extra innings.
With a chance to retake the lead in the top of the eighth inning Chester went down in order when Morgan Colvis struck out and Ashley Andrews and Taylor gross grounded out.
In the bottom of the eighth, Megan Wagner, who now plays for Gibault, reached base on an error and K. McCarthy moved Wagner on a fielder's choice. L. Purcell then smashed a triple to score Wagner and McCarthy and Gibault secured the win in extra innings, 6-4.
In the loss Chester dropped to 1-3 overall. The jackets had three hits and two errors in the game while Gibault recorder nine hits and two errors.
Chester loses heartbreaker at Trico, 2-1, in bottom of seventh
The Lady Jackets traveled to Trico Wednesday, March 31 to take the Lady Pioneers. Both teams went scoreless in the opening inning then Chester took a slim lead, 1-0, in the top of the second.
Morgan Colvis started things off with a nice double and Taylor Gross kept things going with a single to score Colvis and CHS was in the driver's seat. The ensuing three innings were a wash as neither team could score.
Heading into the bottom of the 6th inning Chester still led, 1-0. With one out, Trico's J. McGill knocked a double. Chester's Taylor Gross struck out the Pioneer's next batter, C. Ortiz and Chester had still protected their 1-0 lead. The next Trico batter, K. Boland slammed a base hit scoring McGill and the score was tied, 1-1. Gross struck out the final Trico batter to end the run and the score was tied heading into the seventh and last inning.
In the top of the seventh with a chance to regain the lead, Chester failed as Morgan Colvis grounded out, Ashley Andrews struck out and Taylor Gross grounded out. Trico came to bat tied, 1-1, with every intention to win the game.
M. Fults led off with a base hit to reach base and the potential winning run was eligible to be a hero. Gross struck out the next batter, but M. Reid slammed a single to move Fults to second. K. Taylor then came to bat and reached base on an error and C. Brandon knocked in the wining run with a single. Trico won the heartbreaker, 2-1.
In the win Trico scored two runs on eight hits while Chester scored one run on three hits. Brandon got the win for Trico and freshman Taylor Gross took the loss for the Lady Jackets and CHS fell to 1-4 for the season.
