Carl William Stein

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Carl William Stein, 80, of De Soto, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 9:59 p.m. at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Carl was born on June 9, 1929 in Du Quoin, Ill. to Carl H. Stein and Freida (Wendling) Stein. He was united in marriage with Lois Smith in Du Quoin in 1949. She survives and is of De Soto.

He is survived by his step-mother, Mary Lou Stein of Springfield, Ill.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles W. "Bill" and Doris Stein of Murphysboro and Thomas E. and Paula Stein of Pinckneyville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Freida and Dallas "Derrill" Holder of Carbondale, Kathryn and Ron Bandy of De Soto and Mary Kay and Brett Logan of Du Quoin; two brothers, Edward Stein of Clearwater, Fla. and Robert Gene Wendling of Poplar Bluff; three sisters, Frances Robinson of Murphysboro, Dorothy Georg of Belleville, Ill. and Lu Ann White of Springfield, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Carl also leaves behind numerous friends and his loving caregivers at Helia Healthcare of Carbondale.

Mr. Stein was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Carl was a member of Christ Community Church of Murphysboro, where he was an usher and he sang in the choir. He retired from Prairie Farms after 47 years of service. He was well known as an umpire and referee all over Southern Illinois and was a De Soto grade school crossing guard for many years after retirement. Carl was also an avid bowler and he had a great sense of humor.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 2, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale with Pastors John and Phillip Nordstrom officiating. Visitation was also held at Meredith Funeral Home on Thursday, April 1, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Interment immediately followed the funeral on Friday at the De Soto City Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be given, in lieu of flowers, to the Christ Community Church of Murphysboro and/or the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America and will be accepted by Meredith Funeral Home.
