The turning point of the game came at the close of the first half. Initially planning to take a shot downfield on the final play. During a timeout, Predators Head Coach Pat O'Hara changed his mind and sent out the kicking team. The decision backfired as kicker Carlos Martinez missed wide right, and the kick was returned by P.J. Berry. Berry ducked and dodged all 58 yards to paydirt to give the Battle Wings a 15 point lead at the break instead of the five point defecit the Preds were hoping to face. Despite a strong second half, the Predators were unable to close the gap.
Quarterback Nick Hill of Du Quoin led the Preds, completing 36 of 46 passes for 381 yards. Only four of Hill's passes resulted in touchdowns, but that was somewhat by design. Inside the 5-yard line, the Preds focused almost entirely on running the ball. Hill led the Preds rushing attack as well with five carries for 17 yards and three touchdowns. The Battlewings were led by WR P.J. Berry's 14 receptions for 201 yards and six touchdowns in addition to his 58 yard missed field goal return for a touchdown.
The Predators are on the road again for Week 3. They travel to Jacksonville on Friday, April 16, for their first official clash with the Sharks (1-1, 0-1).
The game will be the first of four nationally televised NFL Network contests for the Preds. It is also the Predators first division contest of the season.
