Evansville ponders storm warnings

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[A foreboding spell of stormy weather gets folks to thinking. One such group of folks is the Evansville Village Board of Trustees.

At their meeting last week, the board thought about the late Jack Scheper, who owned Sparta radio station WHCO, who passed away last November. He served as a civil defense coordinator, coordinating emergency services for Sparta and the surrounding area. Severe weather usually saw him manning the microphone to provide up-to-the minute coverage from the weather bureau.

Now, Village President Mark Otten noted there's a problem with storm warning notification in the village. A number of ideas were floated, including a suggestion that three to five people be designated to watch conditions and when necessary set off the sirens. Brian Thomas, Evansville's police chief proposed using Emergency Services and Disaster Agency funds to purchase additional radios to set off the storm warning sirens.

The board decided to look into the matter further and review it again at their next meeting.

The board met in a lengthy executive session, after which they named Casey Wilson as a part-time village collector.

Property owner Ed Braun complained to the board of a ditch that doesn't drain and causes standing water on his property. He wants to fill it in. The street superintendent will have to check it out before any action is taken.
