Long Range Planning: Coach Al Martin to Retire in 2014

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[<span style="">Du Quoin High School special education instructor and Indian head football coach Al Martin has placed in the hands of the district a letter of retirement effective at the end of the 2013-2014 school year--four years from now.</span>

<span style="">The notice of intent to retire is part of a Thursday school board agenda best described as one of long range planning. </span>

<span style="">Supt. Dr. Gary Kelly is expected to take up with the board items related to the high school construction project including receipt of a construction grant award letter from the Capital Development Board, development of project timelines and a directive to contractors for a proposed $1.2 million industrial arts annex along Line Street south of the high school.</span>

<span style="">The board will also consider filling out staffing needs in the district. The board must fill the vacancy of retiring science instructor Keith Smith who has left teaching because of ongoing issues with Lyme Disease; Du Quoin High School French and journalism instructor Barb Croessman; Middle School language arts teacher Amy Juhl; summer food service program workers and extra-curricular positions. </span>

<span style="">The board will review a planned summer maintenance project list and will consider a four-day work week for the months of June and July for staff members who traditionally work during the summer. </span>

<span style="">The board will look at district cafeteria program menu offerings, consider district audit services and discuss guidelines for fundraising for classes throughout the district.</span>

<span style="">Consent agenda items will include approval of summer food service program low bid awards, renewal of student teacher agreement with SIU-C, approval of insurances and recognition of school, student and staff achievements. </span>

<span style="">Dr. Kelly will update the board on the state budget and the &#210;Race to the Top&#211; initiative. </span>
