Summer prep sports: Mixed results for Du Quoin squads

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Brandon George and Kegan Robbins combined to pitch a five-hitter Tuesday night, helping Du Quoin High School&#39;s Summer Baseball team post a 6-2 win over Goreville as the Southern Illinois Baseball Coaches Association (SIBCA) tournament began at Herrin&#39;s Memorial Park.

The defending SIBCA tourney champ, Du Quoin advances into the semifinals at 8 o&#39;clock Wednesday night, facing the host Herrin squad.

George pitched the first five innings, striking out nine to gain the victory.

Robbins whiffed three in his two frames of work.

In the first-and after spotting Goreville an early 2-0 lead-Du Quoin went ahead for good.

Drew Bennett hit into a fielders choice to score the first run ahead of Sam Gossett&#39;s two-run triple.

Consecutive Blackcats in the third pushed two more runs across for a 5-2 edge. The final run came on another Goreville error in the sixth.

Gossett had two hits with Trent Bigham, J.C. Davis, Bennett, Brenden Fred and Jonah Spencer adding safeties. George was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Davis&#39; hit was a double.

DHS SUMMER SOFTBALL

In girls summer softball action, Du Quoin lost both ends of a doubleheader to Heartland Kids at Power-Ade Park.

At 5 p.m. Wednesday, the Lady Tribe visits Greenville College to play Mulberry Grove in a doubleheader.
