Robert M. Armstrong
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Robert M. Armstrong, 90, of Du Quoin, passed away at 1:44 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Bob had been a former mayor of Du Quoin for 16 years. He was owner and operator of Du Quoin Machine Works and Du Quoin Ideal Cleaners. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Du Quoin and an Elder at the church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had served in the 977 Field Artillery. He was a life member of the Du Quoin American Legion, a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Du Quoin Masonic Lodge. Bob was also a Shriner.
He was born Oct. 12, 1919 at Du Quoin, Ill., the son of Chester and Myrtle (Miller) Armstrong.
He married Mary E. Davison on Nov. 11, 1942 at St. Charles, Mo. and she preceded him in death on March 28, 2009.
He is survived by two sons - Timothy R. Armstrong and wife Linda of McKinney, Tex., and Chet Armstrong of Du Quoin, one brother - Fred C. Armstrong of Nashville, Tenn., four grandchildren - Jana Kuhnert and husband Todd of Tamaroa, Chester Armstrong, Jr. and Jennie Longwell of Du Quoin, Elisa Peterson and husband Ben of Perth, Australia, and Erin Griffin and husband Patrick of Sunset, Utah, and nine great grandchildren - Charlie Kuhnert, Samuel Kuhnert, Tucker Kuhnert, Calliani Peterson, Michael Peterson, Vivienne Peterson, Timothy Griffin, Nathaniel Griffin, and Lylah Armstrong.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary of 68 years, and daughter-in-law - Connie J. Armstrong.
Memorial services were at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Tim Scroggins officiating.
Friends called from Noon until the time of service at the church on Saturday.
Friends may make memorials to the First Presbyterian Church in Du Quoin and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin at a later date.
