VOLLEYBALL: Du Quoin improves to 18-5
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ The DuQuoin High School volleyball team continued their winning ways with a conference win over Carterville on Tuesday evening. The home win gives DuQuoin an 18-5 (5-2 S.I.R.R. Mississippi) record for the season. DuQuoin won the match 2-0 with game scores of 25-9 and 25-15.
The starting lineup for the Varsity was slightly different because of the injury to Michaela Brown. Starting were Rebekah Maddox, Ashley Ward, Kelsey Toler, Megi Jones, Jessica Hirsch, Keawna Anders, and Cassidy Rice at Libero.
DuQuoin got off to a fast start in game #1 with Ashley Ward serving. The score went quickly to 6-1, and DuQuoin continued to dominate at all aspects of the game. Both Toler and Maddox were awesome at the net putting down spike after spike. DuQuoin was victorious in this game by a score of 25-9. Carterville gave DuQuoin a better battle in the second game with a score of 25-15.
Varsity stats were: Rice 7 and Ward 4 led in digs. The assists leaders were Jones 11 and Ward 8. Maddox and Toler led in kills with 7 and 11; Anders also had 5. Points scored on serve were Ward 11, Toler 10, Anders 3, Jones 1, Rice 8, and Hirsch 2. Jessica Martin and Curry Emling also played in the match.
Coach Isaac Miller thought his team "did a good job of playing mistake-free volleyball. We came out playing really well the first game, and we have been talking about coming out and having a better game #2. Tonight we did that. We had to make some changes after Michaela Brown hurt her knee, and the girl's did a great job with those changes."
The Junior Varsity also won their match 25-16, 10-25, 25-16. The JV record is 4-5.
Annie Bastien 9 and Kate Toler 5 led in digs. Abby Myers 6 and Kate Toler 3 led in kills. The assist leaders were Jessica Phillips 8 and Hailey Stewart 3. Katie Parks and Taylor King each had a block.
The Freshmen Team also was victorious running their record to 14-1. The scores of the two games were 21-10 and 21-16.
Lela Copeland 7, Kate Toler, and Hailey Stewart 3 led in kills. Annie Bastien and Stewart led digs with 6, and Kate Toler had 5.
DuQuoin plays on Thursday evening at Pinckneyville, which is another conference game. On Saturday they will travel to Marion for a tournament.
