GOLF: McDaniel moves on to Decatur
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"> Pinckneyville sophomore Heather McDaniel advanced into this weekend's IHSA Class A Girls Golf State Finals with a round of 87 at yesterday's Carlyle Sectional at Governors Run, good for third amongst individuals on non-qualifying teams.
The Lady Panthers finished fifth as a team, seventeen strokes away from a state berth.
"I'm very pleased with our team's effort," said PCHS golf coach Dennis Kania. "Governors Run demands accuracy on the back nine and on course management. Some of the more demanding holes got the better of our team."
Nashville took home the sectional title with their total of 356, Massac County places second (373) and Freeburg was third (378).
Pinckneyville's team score of 395 was four strokes better than their Regional score, posted on their home course at Red Hawk Country Club last Wednesday.
Nashville freshman Shawn Rennegarbe was the only golfer to make par, shooting 72 to finish first.
Two PCHS ladies were just six strokes from qualifying as individuals, as Kelsey Cicardi and Olivia Mathis both posted rounds of 100.
"Olivia Mathis played very well and if she could have eliminated two bad holes, she could be advancing," Kania said.
Brooke Heisner's 108 rounded out the team's total, Mo Ramsey (109) and Alexis Anderson (117) also took part for the Lady Panthers.
Du Quoin's Blair Hester finished her day with a score of 109.
Valentine shoots 83 in Carterville
In the Carterville boys' sectional, Pinckneyville's Adam Valentine missed a trip to state by seven strokes, putting together a round of 83 at Crab Orchard Golf Course.
Valentine ran into some bad luck on his second hole when a ball hit into the rough couldn't be found.
Mount Carmel (287), Hillsboro (312) and Robinson (315) advanced to Bloomington for the state finals as teams, edging out Nashville (316). Mount Carmel took three of the top four individual spots at the sectional, including a tie for first with senior Wade Thompson and sophomore Christian Seaton (69).
