GOLF: McDaniel in contention after Day 1 at Decatur

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ Pinckneyville&#39;s Heather McDaniel is in contention for a state championship after 18 holes of play in the IHSA Class A State Golf Tournament in Decatur.

McDaniel fired an opening round 83 (+11) on Friday, good for a tenth place tie overall out of the 110 Class A golfers at Red Tail Run Golf Course. Jessica Schultz (Somonauk) has the lead with her round of 77 (+5), four strokes better than a five-way tie at +9 for second place.

McDaniel did no worse than bogey on any hole, including a birdie on the 18th. Opening on the back nine, she fired a 40 on her first nine holes, then a 43 on the front nine to close out the day.
