Chester Veterans' program November 11

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The annual Chester Veterans' Day program will be held at the Chester American Legion Post 487 at 500 Opdyke Street on November 11 beginning at 10:00 a.m. to honor all veterans.

Commander Roland Wagner of the American Legion invites the public to attend this program to thank those veterans who have served our country and to show support for those men and women who are serving in the military today.

Armistice Day on November 11 was declared with the ending of World War I on

June 28, 1919, and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The actual fighting between the Allies and Germany, however, had ended seven months earlier with the armistice, which went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Armistice Day officially became a holiday in the United States in 1926. It became a national holiday twelve years later and on June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day.

Participating in the program will be Commander Roland Wagner of the American Legion, Kenneth Ragland, Commander of V.F.W. Post 3553, Mayor Joe Eggemeyer, Rev. Ed Rowley, and speaker Alan Buescher, Lt. Col. (Retired) USMC. Musical selections will be performed by the Chester High School Band under the direction of Mr. Steve Colonel. A salute of departed veterans will be provided by the VFW Firing Squad followed by the playing of Taps.

Another feature of the program will be the collection of food items for the Christian Food Pantry. Commander Wagner asks for volunteer donations of non-perishable items to be brought to the program. All items received will be donated to the Pantry for inclusion in the Thanksgiving baskets which will be distributed to their patrons prior to Thanksgiving. Commander Wagner said, "We can all show our concern for our community and its residents by donating to this very worthwhile cause."

At the conclusion of the program. all are invited to have lunch provided by the American Legion.
