Sparta hands DMS boys a slim defeat

Du Quoin Middle School's boys basketball squad fell by a mere two points last night, dropping their first game of the season 39-37 at home.

The Warriors were led by Jacob Wright's 10 points (including a pair of three-pointers), A.J. Smith added 7, Jerry Kuhnert and Jacob Hunziker 6 a piece, and Jacob Valier and Nolan Showalter each finished with 4.

"(This is) a tough loss to take at home in the conference," said DMS head coach Ryan Heape.

"When you lose the battle of the boards 32-27 and miss a dozen stickbacks, a two-point loss is fixable."

DMS (4-1) returns to the floor Tuesday at Trico (5:30 p.m. - JV).

For the Du Quoin Evening Call

The DuQuoin Middle School Girls Basketball Team traveled to Sparta on Monday evening, and the eighth grade came home a winner. The Warriors won by a score of 22-14. Their record overall is now 6-6 and 2-3 in the conference.

Coach Debbie Ritter thought "the girls did a good job mixing up the defense. They played hard and got in a bit of foul trouble towards the end, but were able to play through it, and get the win."

DuQuoin led at the end of the first quarter 7-2 and at the half 15-4. The quarter had DuQuoin winning 17-7 and the final score was 22-14. Jacqueline Harsy led all scorers with 9, followed by Amanda Atteberry with 8, Marisa Ferguson 2, Jessica Harsy 2, and Carissa Graham 1.

The seventh grade lost a tough game 12-8. The Warriors just could not seem to get anything going in this game.

DMS plays on Monday, November 29, at Home against Christopher. Game time is 6:00.
