BASKETBALL: Sparta's Robinson lights up Lady Indians
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Sparta's Jessica Robinson was a one woman show on Tuesday evening when Sparta played against DuQuoin at home. Robinson scored 43 points, while DuQuoin only scored 40. The final score was Sparta 61-40.
The first quarter saw a very close game at 12-10 Sparta, but the second quarter was all Robinson and Sparta. The half-time score was 34-17. Robinson scored 28 points in the first half. The second half Robinson scored 15 points, and she was out part of a quarter with an injury. She shot 13-16 at the free throw line.
DuQuoin's leading scorer was Jessica Hirsch with 12 points. She was followed by Steffanie Gates with 6, Shelby Presley 5, Rebekah Maddox 5, Ashley Ward 4, Cassidy Rice 3, Curry Emling 3, and Taylor King 2.
DuQuoin's overall record is now 3-2 and 0-1 in the Southern Illinois River-to-River conference's Mississippi division.
The junior varsity team won their game over Sparta 39-24. Coach Jason James was able to play all of his players in the game. This was the JV's first game of the season.
In the first half, DuQuoin held Sparta to only 5 points and displayed an outstanding defensive effort.
Scoring for the j-v team was Magen Edwards 8, Shelby Presley 8, Taylor King 7, Abby Myers 6, Bailie Caldwell 4, Katrina Whitley 2, Ashanti Warren 2, and Cassidy Rice 2. Morgan Dennis also saw action for the Indians.
DuQuoin travels to Harrisburg on Thursday evening for their next game (8:00 p.m. varsity).
