</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The DuQuoin High School Girls Basketball Team took a long road trip to Harrisburg last night that paid great dividends. DuQuoin was able to win both the Varsity and Jr. Varsity games. The Varsity won big 57-31 and the Jr. Varsity played a closer game, but won 39-35.
The DuQuoin Varsity was ahead at the end of the first quarter 11-8 and never looked back. Their big quarter came in the second when they outscored Harrisburg 12-1. Coach Shawn File attributed that to a change in defense--going to the zone. The third quarter had DuQuoin winning 42-20, and the final score ended up at 57-31.
DuQuoin's leading scorer was Jessica Hirsch with 12. She was followed by Ashley Ward with 10, Rebekah Maddox had 10, Curry Emling 7, Cassidy Rice 6, Shelby Presley 6, Taylor King 3, and Steffanie Gates 3. All eight varsity players scored in this game. Ward had a double, double with 10 rebounds as well as 10 points.
Coach File was happy about the victory. "We came out a little slow. Going to the zone defense was a big turning point in the second quarter. We were able to have all eight girls score in the game. That was a great thing! I am very pleased with our performance tonight. We still need to improve on the defensive end."
The Varsity record is now 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Jr. Varsity team also won. The score for their game was 39-35. Hailey Stewart and Bailie Caldwell were the leading scorers with 9. Taylor King contributed 6, Cassidy Rice 6, Abby Myers 6, Shelby Presley 2, and Katrina Whitley 2 points. The JV record is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The JV Coach is Jason James.
The next game for the Indians is a home game with Carterville on Tuesday, December 7. Game time is 6:30 for the JV, and approximately 8:00 for the Varsity. This is an S.I.R.R. conference game for the Indians.
