District 300 Board Expels Student
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The Du Quoin Board of Education met in special session at 4:30 p.m. Monday to conduct a disciplinary hearing on a a high school student who was remanded back to DHS from an alternative school setting.
Dr. Gary Kelly says the alternative school setting provides an educational environment for students who need an alternative to a traditional school environment. If that setting doesn't work out, a student can be remanded back to the district he or she came from for disciplinary action.
That is what happened in this instance and after executive session deliberation, the board returned to open session and voted to expel the student for a period of one year.
All board members were in attendance at the meeting.
In the only other action the board accepted with regret the resignation of Kathy Toler as Du Quoin High School Assistant Softball Coach effective at the present time.
Dr. Kelly said Mrs. Toler's own children play softball and serving as assistant high school softball coach prevented her from watching her own children participate in sports.
Her resignation was simply a matter of family and spending quality time with her children.
With no other action before it, the board meeting adjourned.
Special Note
Dr. Kelly this morning made special note of the mid-year retirement of Mrs. Kathy Campanella as business instructor at the Du Quoin High School.
A special presentation was to be made today and that photograph will be published soon in the newspaper.
Mrs. Campanella's outstanding career in education was featured this fall in the Magnavox.
