WASHINGTON- U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) today voted against H.R. 2, the Patients' Rights Repeal Act, which would repeal two health care overhaul laws: the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act. The legislation passed the House on a largely party-line vote and now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration, where repeal is not expected to succeed.
Costello pointed to estimates that passage of repeal would have a negative impact on individuals living in Illinois' 12th Congressional District, including insurance companies being able to deny coverage to 109,000 to 283,000 individuals, 2,700 uninsured young adults no longer being able to stay on their parent's insurance plan, and 9,800 seniors who enter the Medicare Part D Donut Hole having to return to paying 100% of the cost of their prescription drugs.
"I oppose an outright repeal of health care reform, as we cannot afford to roll back critical protections for millions of Americans and increase the national deficit," said Costello. "However, I fully expect that adjustments to the health care reform law will have to be made as it is implemented, just as they have with Social Security and Medicare."
