Du Quoin Taps District 300 For Building Permit for DHS

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The Du Quoin City Council Monday night tabled a request from Du Quoin Community Unit District 300 to waive a $10,800 building permit fee the city is seeking for construction of the new Du Quoin High School.

District 300 attorney Jerry Smith is arguing the zoning permit construction fee should be waived for several reasons.

First, he argues that District 300's geography extends beyond the corporate limits of Du Quoin and that District 300 existed long before the zoning ordinances were drafted.

There is also an agument that a building permit is a tax and that one tax-supported public entity cannot tax another public entity.

Reconstruction of the Du Quoin High School involves 108,000 square feet of construction at 10 cents a square foot. If you do the math, that's $10,800.

The dialogue continued after the meeting between the school's attorney, District 300 business manager Cory Robbins and Du Quoin public works director Dale Spencer.
