BASEBALL: Indians struggle on both sides vs. Lions
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[DuQuoin High School Baseball made four errors that cost them three unearned runs against Carterville in a home game on Monday. Those errors coupled with only three hits by DuQuoin gave Carterville a 4-0 victory in this conference contest.
Losing pitcher, Brandon George, pitched well enough to win under normal circumstances. He pitched all seven innings, allowing one earned run, 3 hits, two walks, and 9 strikeouts. There were three unearned runs scored by Carterville. Carterville scored one run in the second inning and three in the fourth inning.
DuQuoin had three hits. J.C. Davis was 1-3 with was a double. Trent Bigham was 1-2 and Connor Wheeler was 1-3. DuQuoin's overall record is 4-9 and 1-3 in the conference.
Coach Tim Craft was obviously disappointed in his team's loss. "You can't play baseball if you can't play catch. All of our errors today were throwing errors. Brandon George was great on the mound! We just didn't back him up today."
DuQuoin travels to Pinckneyville on Tuesday. There will also be a JV game. (4:30)
<u>J-V Indians crush Carterville 17-5</u>
The DuQuoin High School Jr. Varsity Baseball Team defeated Carterville on Monday even after a thirty minute delay for lightning. The game only lasted five innings and the final score was DuQuoin 17 and Carterville 5.
The winning pitcher for DuQuoin was Garrett Dorsey who pitched 3 2/3 innings. Dorsey allowed the five runs (all earned), 4 hits, had 4 strikeouts, and 8 walks. Camdon Mercier relieved for 1 1/3 innings allowing no runs, no hits, had 2 walks and no strikeouts.
DuQuoin scored six runs in the first, one run in the second inning, seven runs in the seventh, and three in the fourth. Carterville scored three runs in the first, and one run in the second and fourth innings.
DuQuoin had 15 hits. Camden Youngman was 1-3 (a double) with an RBI. Brenden Fred was 3-3 with an RBI. Nate Boss was 3-4 with an RBI. Garrett Dorsey was 3-4 with a double and 5 RBI. Austin Mansker was 1-3. Jonah Spencer was 0-2 with an RBI. John Erwin was 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Thomas Hamlin was 1-1 with a double. Jacob O'Rourke was 1-2 with an RBI. Brendan Shepard was 1-1. Also playing for the Indians were Camden Mercier, Kenny Kellerman, Daulton Bigham, and Kody Hess.
Coach Jeromie Morgan thought his team "hit the ball very well today. It was a long layoff since our last game, and we did not come back focused in the beginning. We got back on track, and played very well. There was a thirty minute lightning delay, but we were not bothered by it. We did the small things right today. I could not ask any more from this group. They are working hard, and have good attitudes." The JV record is 5-2.
The JV Indians play again on Tuesday at Pinckneyville. (4:30)
