</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Sparta took home the team title at the 14th annual Herrin Invitational track and field competition this past Saturday, edging out Harrisburg and the host Tigers by just over 10 points. Du Quoin came home fourth out of the eleven participating teams.

Karson Hoffman brought home the Indians' lone first place showing on Saturday, a well-fought battle in the 400 meters where Hoffman finished with a time of 50.91.

The victory for Hoffman in that race prevented Harrisburg's John David Rollins from going four-for-four on the day, as the senior took home wins in the long jump, and both 100m and 200m dashes. Rollins was third to Hoffman and Nashville's Gannon Mamell in the 400m.

Hoffman (10.69) was second in the 100m behind Rollins, who broke school and meet records with his time of 10.26. The previous meet record was held Du Quoin's Zach Atkins, who ran 10.7 in 2007.

In the 200m, Hoffman came in third behind Rollins and Seth Buch (Sparta).

Other notable happenings for Du Quoin included a pair of second place finishes by Chaz Bland in the 110m and 300m hurdles. Bland added a third place in the triple jump, Hoffman was fourth in that same event.

Rounding out top three finishers for the Indians, Brock Morgenstern was second at the shot put (49'9) and Haeden Sweetin third at pole vault (12'0).
