SOFTBALL: Carmi keeps Elverado's bats quiet

"We've got to do a better job hitting," said Elverado head softball coach Donette Wheatley. "Our defense has come around but our sticks have gone quiet."

The Lady Bulldogs got two in the first and three more in the third off of EHS starter Corrine Wilson, who dropped to 3-10 on the season after going all seven innings. Only three of the five runs against Wilson were allowed, and she struck out five and walked none.

At the plate, Elverado got their only run in the seventh inning when Sami Hicks (1-3, R) singled and scored. Erika Will (1-3) had the other Lady Falcons' hit, a single in the fifth. Wilson (0-2) and Kelsi Teague (0-2) drew walks.

"I've got to give (Carmi's Olivia) Harrelson credit, she made the ball move a lot," Wheatley said.

Harrelson sent 13 EHS batters down via the strikeout.

Elverado (6-13, 2-6) was off on Tuesday and will be at Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher on Wednesday. The Lady Falcons are at Pinckneyville on Monday, then begin Regional play on May 18 against Wolf Lake (Shawnee) at Steeleville.
