Mausoleum repairs

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Improvements were made recently to the old mausoleum in the Chester Evergreen Cemetery. The mausoleum is located near the rear of the cemetery on FC2C Gerald M. Johnson Lane and was built prior to 1960. It has a total of 30 crypts (10 across, 3 high) which are each 2 deep allowing for entombment of 60 caskets. The front of the structure was built with Indiana limestone and it needed to be replaced due to deterioration over the years.

Bricklayer Todd Dunn, Cemetery Superintendent Mark Gibbs and Park Superintendent Kevin Diercks worked about four days to complete the demolition, repair and rebuilding on the structure. All of the 30 engraved marble slabs had to be removed and stored during the renovation. Materials were ordered and special cut to fit the front grid. After removing the entire front, the new pieces were positioned and mortared in. Some of the Indiana limestone pieces needed to be re-cut by the workers to modify them for the spaces.

During the project, some mausoleum wall areas and joints were also regrouted. After all the new materials were installed, all joints were grouted and then recaulked to keep the moisture out. This project was needed since the structure was beginning to show deterioration due to age and exposure to the elements. The mausoleum now looks more attractive and should remain strong and sealed for many years to come.

The Chester Evergreen Cemetery is governed by the Cemetery Board. Current members are Richard Brown and Andrew Schuwerk. The Cemetery staff carefully maintains the spacious grounds throughout the year. The solemn site is impressive to Chester residents and visitors as it remains a dignified resting place for many, and is filled with Chester area history.
