At the outset, indications are that jail staff members followed all of the accepted Illinois Jail Code security standards and that there was no reckless disregard on the part of the staff.
Dane was about to be transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections to begin serving a 60-year sentence after confessing to Stephens' murder when he took his own life in his cell. He was found hanged at approximately 5 a.m.
The Illinois State Police investigations unit told the newspaper Wednesday it is waiting for the autopsy and toxicology report before reducing its findings to a written report.
Sheriff Keith Kellerman has commented only that there were no signs that Dane was suicidal and the jail staff followed the prescribed regimen of security in the facility.
