13-Year-Old Texan Takes Grand Champion Title at Du Quoin State Fair Livestock Show

Just ask 13-year-old Tanner Howey, who came all the way from Rockwell, Tex. to show his yearling Hereford "Destiny" in the youth livestock show at the Du Quoin State Fair.
Tanner's parents, Raymond and Angela, let Tanner travel the Midwest with family friend Tyler Babbs whose last stop was a state fair in Missouri. Tyler touted the quality of the livestock show in Du Quoin and the beautiful surroundings, so Tanner said, "Let's go!" He entered Destiny in the yearling Hereford division and in Sunday's 10 a.m. judging landed not only first place with its $60 premium, but then went on to take the Grand Champion title and its $75 premium.
Tanner was very polite and appreciative in talking to assistant fair manager Norm Hill and special events manager Danette Harbison. Everything was "yes ma'am" and "yes sir."
Tanner stands probably no more than a scant 5 feet, but everything about him is tall. He has been exhibiting at shows for about four years and knows everything there is to know about caring for and exhibiting livestock. While Destiny was his only entry in the Du Quoin show, he also likes to show Angus and Simmental, as well.
