VOLLEYBALL: DHS strong in home opener

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The DuQuoin High School Varsity Volleyball Team played two really great games against Sparta on Thursday evening in the first home match of the season. They won the match 2-0 with game scores of 25-19 and 25-11. The Varsity&#39;s overall record is 7-6 and 1-1 in the Conference. The matches were played at the Middle School.

Coach Jane Tuthill was really excited about her team&#39;s win. "I was really pleased with the hustle when we got into a crisis situation. We were ready to play tonight, and handled Sparta&#39;s #28 really well. We really kept our composure throughout the match. Our practice drills have finally paid off in the long run."

Megi Jones led in assists with nine followed by Jessie Martin and Alexis Kohrs with 3. Rebekah Maddox led in blocks with 5 and Cassidy Rice had 4. Tomi Hamlin led in digs with 7. Megi Jones had 2 aces at the serving line. Hamlin, Martin, and Anders each had one ace at the line. Keawna Anders was the kill leader with 8. Kohrs had 5, Michaela Brown, Cassidy Rice, and Rebekah Maddox had 4 kills. Jessica Hirsch had 3 kills.

Other Indians on the team are: Latesha Nesbitt, Katie Parks, Kate Toler, and Hailey Stewart. The Jr. Varsity lost their match 2-0 with game scores of 25-19 and 25-15 Sparta. The Freshman Team also lost two close games to Sparta 25-19 and 25-23. The JV and Freshmen are coached by Sara Geiger.

The members of the JV and Freshman teams are: Bailie Caldwell, Amber Williams. Annie Bastien, Leonora Ajroja, Abby Myers, Hope Fenton, Hailey Stewart, Lela Spiller-Copeland, Carissa Lindner, Amanda Atteberry, Kate Toler, and Chandra Gilliam.

The Varsity travels to Massac County on Saturday for a tournament. They will play five matches on that day. The Freshmen will be hosting a tournament in DuQuoin on Saturday.

Note: The Marion Tournament has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 1.
