SOFTBALL: PJHS knocked out in State Quarterfinals
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Both starting pitchers threw well enough to win Saturday's SIJHSAA Class M State Softball Quarterfinal between Breese and Pinckneyville (District #50), but a pair of costly errors allowed three unearned runs to eliminate the Junior Lady Panthers 3-0 despite Brooklyn Morrow's 14-strikeout performance on the rubber.
PJHS got four runners to second base or beyond in the game, but stranded each one. Mariah Clark (2-for-3) was the only Junior Lady Panther with multiple hits, Morrow (1-2, BB) had the other. Morgan Gleason, Kylee Kline and Daisy Dudek also reached base with walks.
Morrow allowed just three hits and a walk in her seven innings, but still took the loss. Errors in the fifth and seventh inning accounted for each of Breese's three tallies against PJHS.
Breese pitcher Kaylee Schrand struck out ten batters while also allowing just three hits. She walked four in picking up the victory.
Breese advances into Tuesday's 3:00 p.m. State Semifinal where they will meet Cobden. New Athens and Smithton face of at 1:00 p.m. to decide the other half of Thursday's Finals.
