VOLLEYBALL: Du Quoin tops Pinckneyville at "Pink-Out" on Tuesday
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The Volleyball game on Tuesday evening between Pinckneyville and DuQuoin was a "pink" game--a fund raiser to fight cancer. There was a larger than usual crowd in attendance, the gym was decorated in pink, and there were lots of activities to raise money including a 50-50 drawing, raffles, etc.
The DuQuoin High School Band played between the JV Match and Varsity as well as played the National Anthem prior to the Varsity match. The evening was festive and raised money for a good cause. And the Varsity Indians won their match over Pinckneyville 2-0 with game scores of 25-12 and 25-20. DuQuoin's record is now 15-15 overall and 3-5 in the Conference. Pinckneyville's overall record is 4-18 and 1-8 in the Conference.
DuQuoin Indian Coach Jane Tuthill was pleased with her team's performance. "I thought our coverage tonight was good. I thought our serve reception was better. We have been working on that. My one concern is that there was some miscommunications. We did take care of the net. When we didn't take care of the net, we got behind. I am pleased with the way we are going. We are still working hard. We took a few days off over the weekend, and that has seemed to help us get revived."
The Pinckneyville Head Coach is Katie Shaneyfelt. The Assistant Coaches are Julie Lamb, Bryant Hale, and Heather Hagood. DuQuoin's Assistant Coach is Sarah Geiger.
Pinckneyville's starting lineup was Shannon Nehrkorn, Haley Simpson, Denise Bruns, Danielle Bruns, Lindsey Winter, Morgan Wild and Alexis Bigham was the Libero. DuQuoin started Rebekah Maddox, Keawna Anders, Cassidy Rice, Jessica Hirsch, Megi Jones, Jessica Martin, and Tomi Hamlin was the Libero. Also seeing action for the Indians were Alexis Kohrs and Michaela Brown.
Shannon Nehrkorn led Pinckneyville in kills with 6. Lindsey Winter had 9 assists. Danielle Bruns had 3 blocks while Haley Simpson had two blocks. Morgan Wild was 6-7 at the service line, Lindsey Winter was 4-4, and Denise Bruns was 5-5.
On the DuQuoin side, Megi Jones had 25 assists with Jessica Martin having 16. Keawna Anders led in digs with 18 followed by Jessica Hirsch with 16. Rebekah Maddox led in kills with 9, Hirsch had 7, Michaela Brown 5, and Anders had 4 kills. Maddox led in blocks with 3. Megi Jones led in serves going 11-12 with an ace. Cassidy Rice was 9-9 with an ace.
In the Junior Varsity match Pinckneyville won a very hard fought match 2-1. Game scores were 25-21 Pinckneyville, 25-21 DuQuoin, and 17-15 Pinckneyville.
DuQuoin's JV record is 13-2 overall. The DuQuoin Freshmen won their match over Pinckneyville 2-0. Game scores were 21-8 and 21-13.
Coach Tuthill did not have an exact amount of how much was raised for the Cause. She wanted to thank Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hamlin for raising $125 from tailgating at Friday's football game. Coach Tuthill said $136 was raised in the 50/50 drawing. She also wanted to thank Main Street T's for donating the profit from the T-shirts sales to the Cause. In addition, there were donations collected from the Teachers at the high school that will be added into the total donation.
DuQuoin travels to Nashville on Thursday for a Conference match while the PCHS hosts Sparta.
