Chester's last home football game of the season provided plenty of thrills as the Yellow Jackets topped Fairfield by a score of 33-32.
After Fairfield fumbled on their opening drive, the Yellow Jackets got on the board at the 7:19 mark when Jake Lochhead completed a 23 yard pass to Caleb Arbeiter.
Fairfield came right back and marched 59 yards for a touchdown. The two point conversion made it 8-7 Fairfield. The Mules also scored on their next possession to make it 16-7.
The Yellow Jackets were able to regroup and put up two more scores in the second quarter. A 15 yard run by Stephen Roth made it 16-13, then a six yard touchdown run and extra point gave Chester a 20-16 lead late in the second.
Chester added seven more points in the middle of the third quarter when Tyler Brockhouse picked up a Fairfield fumble and returned it 42 yards.
The Mules briefly regained the lead following two long drives that were helped along by some Chester penalties. Two point conversions were good in both cases, making it 32-27 with 8:35 left to go in the game.
If Chester was going to pull one out, they would have to score at least once more then shut down Fairfield's offense. That is exactly what the Yellow Jackets were able to do.
Chester's drive almost stalled, but a fourth down pass from Lochhead to Arbeiter put the ball at the 10 yard line. After three running plays, Arbeiter's short pass to Boyd Miles put the Yellow Jackets on top 33-32 with 3:22 left.
Fairfield's last-ditch effort got off to a good start with several nice plays that took them from their own 27 yard line into Chester's territory. But at that point things fell apart for the Mules. A big tackle by Casey Venable, a penalty and a couple of incomplete passes gave the ball to Chester and allowed the Yellow Jackets to run out the clock.
Roth was the leading rusher for Chester with 166 yards. Lochhead completed six passes. Arbeiter was the top receiver with 66 yards on three catches and Joel Clendenin had one catch for 26 yards.
Chester closes out their season with a 7:00 game at Hamilton Co. on Friday.
