VOLLEYBALL: Lady Indians set up showdown with Benton
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The DuQuoin High School volleyball team may have given their coach, Jane Tuthill, a few new gray hairs after the first round of the Benton Regional on Tuesday evening, but a win is a win. It was close - DuQuoin defeated Sesser-Valier-Waltonville (SVW) 2-0 with game scores of 25-22 and 26-24.
Benton and DuQuoin will meet on Thursday evening for the championship at 7:00. DuQuoin is the #2 seed in the tournament, while Benton is #1. DuQuoin's record is now 17-17.
Coach Jane Tuthill made these comments after the game. "The first problem was again, we clammed up, and there was not enough communication between players. When we talked, we did all right. We had some bad passes tonight. We are going to work on coverage tomorrow (at practice) and our communications."
DuQuoin began game one serving and took the lead 1-0 on a SVW missed hit, then Keawna Anders' spike was good to tie the score at 3-3, but the Devils would fight back. SVW was up 9-5, but then served out. DuQuoin's spike went out to make the score 10-6 SVW. Brown's spike scored for DuQuoin, and Rebekah Maddox scored on a left-handed shot. SVW spiked to make the score 11-9, but Maddox's tip scored for DuQuoin; she followed with a block to cut the lead to a single point.
SVW hit out of bounds to tie the score at 12. Cassidy Rice's spike at 13-13 scored for DuQuoin; she followed with a another spike for DuQuoin to go up by two. The two teams traded points back and forth until Maddox spiked down and good for DuQuoin to go up 23-17. Maddox also scored on a tip. SVW came back to make the score 24-22, but served out to give DuQuoin the win at 25-22.
In game two, SVW led 18-15 when Maddox's spike scored for DuQuoin to go 18-16 SVW. DuQuoin was called for net violation, then Anders' spike was good. Rice had a spike score. The score was 20-18 SVW. The game went back and forth until the score was tied at 24 each. Maddox's spike put DuQuoin up by one. The final point scored was Michaela Brown's spike. DuQuoin won the game 26-24 and the match 2-0.
DuQuoin will play the host team, Benton, in the Regional Championship game on Thursday evening at Benton.
