BASKETBALL: Lady Indians roll into championship game
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The 2011 Indians Tip-Off Classic Tournament, sponsored by the Jaycees, continued on Monday evening with three basketball games. The early (5:30) game had the Elverado Falcons (0-3) and the Johnston City Indians (0-3) playing. Johnston City won that contest 39-27. Johnston City is now 1-3 in the tournament and Elverado 0-4.
The leading scorer for Elverado was Lacey Qualls with 10 points. Rebecca Korando had 8 points, Hannah Rawson 7, and Corine Wilson 2. The leading scorers for Johnston City were Kelsie Nagrodski with 17 points and Molly Price with 13.
The Elverado Coach, Lance Bedar, commented that "we did not shoot very well or play very well in this game."
The second game of the evening (7:00) pitted the DuQuoin Indians (3-0) against the Steeleville Warriors (1-2). DuQuoin got off to a rather slow start going up 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. DuQuoin picked up the pace in the second quarter going ahead 24-9 at the half. At the end of three quarters, DuQuoin still led 34-16, and the final score was 44-19.
The DuQuoin Indians were led in scoring by Jessica Hirsch with 23 points. Rebekah Maddox scored 12 points, Alexis Kohrs 7, and Taylor King 2. Other Indians seeing action were Abby Myers, Bailie Caldwell, Kelsey Robinson, and Shelby Presley. Cassidy Rice is unable to play due to an injury.
For Steeleville, the leading scorer was Natalie Ruebke with 8. Alex Gale had 6 points, Sara Potter 3, and Morgan Lindner 2.
DuQuoin Coach, Shawn File thought, "we did a great job in transition tonight; we had a lot of easy layups that we were able to score on. Defensively, we had another great effort tonight. We contested all of their jump shots. Jessica Hirsch scored well for us. We have been very balanced in scoring. Jess stepped up for us tonight. Abby Myers did a nice job filling in on defense. Everybody is settling into their rolls and playing together as a team." Jason James is the assistant coach.
The third game of the evening (8:30) was between the Woodlawn Cardinals (3-0) and Murphysboro Red Devils (2-1). Woodlawn overwhelmed Murphysboro 50-28 in that game. Woodlawn is now 4-0 in the tournament and Murphysboro 2-2.
The schedule for Tuesday evening is: 5:30 -Elverado vs. Steeleville; 7:00 - Murphysboro vs. Johnston City; 8:30 - DuQuoin vs. Woodlawn.
Both DuQuoin and Woodlawn are 4-0 in the tournament. The 8:30 game will be for the championship of the tournament. The winner will end with a 5-0 record for the tournament and take home the trophy. Special thanks to the Jaycees for again sponsoring this event.
