Luechtefeld statement on temporary relief for Chester and Murphysboro
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ A supplemental appropriation has passed the General Assembly that will allow the Chester Mental Health Center and Illinois Youth Center at Murphysboro to remain open through the fiscal year, according to State Sen. Dave Luechtefeld (R-Okawville).
The General Assembly passed Senate Bills 1311 and 2412, which allow for a supplemental appropriation to keep the two southern Illinois facilities open until the end of Fiscal Year 2012.
"I know this entire process has been grueling for both communities and for all individuals involved," Luechtefeld said. "The Governor's plan to shutter the facilities in Chester and Murphysboro was clearly not developed with much rational thought. Except for stopping the current closures, there is not a lot to be extremely confident about. The fight will go on and it is possible that we will be back debating the same closures next year."
Luechtefeld stressed that while he was pleased the facilities will remain open for now, he is going to continue working with area leaders on a long-term strategy.
"This is a victory for both communities; hopefully, it will not be short-lived," Luechtefeld concluded.
