DuQuoin had a big win over Z-R-C 50-41 to advance to the second round of the Regional.
DuQuoin will play the No. 1 seed and host of the tournament, Herrin, on Wednesday evening at 6:00. Herrin gave DuQuoin the first loss of the season in the Holiday Tournament after Christmas. Revenge may be on the minds of the Indians on Wednesday.
DuQuoin had a very slow start. It may have been nerves, but the Indians were behind 9-3 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, they came to life, and moved ahead of Z-R-C 21-19. DuQuoin continued to expand the lead in the third quarter, and were up 35-27. DuQuoin held Z-R-C at bay and went on to win 50-41.
In December, the Indians had previously defeated the Tornadoes 45-34.
Jessica Hirsch, had a fantastic night, leading DuQuoin scorers with 26 points including two-three pointers. Rebekah Maddox had a great night in the paint with 20 points. Alexis Kohrs had 2 points, Cassidy Rice 1, and Taylor King 1.
Maddox and Kohrs both had to spend some time on the bench after getting into foul trouble in the second half. Also seeing playing time were Bailie Caldwell, Abby Myers, and Shelby Presley. Other team members are Kelsey Robinson, Carissa Graham, Jacqueline Harsy, and Morgan Dennis.
DuQuoin's record is now 23-7 overall. They finished the conference at 7-3.
Z-R-C was led in scoring by Allie Mayer with 12 points. Chandra Weddle had 11 points, Brandy Mifflin 9, Maddy Caruso 5, Kaleigh Perry 2, and Chelsey Greenwood 2. Z-R-C ends their season with a 17-10 record overall.
Coach Shawn File had this to say about the game: "I was a little bit nervous after the first quarter. We were a little tight and nervous. We came back in the second quarter, and had a good quarter. Maddox and Hirsch stepped up big for us tonight. They did a great job of playing off one another, and handling the pressure. I am excited to get a chance to play Herrin again. There is a lot at stake on Wednesday night. Abby Myers did a good job on the defensive end against Z-R-C. We got into some foul trouble and Bailie Caldwell and Shelby Presley played good minutes for us. It is a lot of fun when we play together."
Prior to the game the three-point shootout was held. Each team had four players participate. DuQuoin had Jessica Hirsch, Cassidy Rice, Alexis Kohrs, and Rebekah Maddox shooting. Hirsch had 10-15 three pointers to lead the competition. Cassidy Rice had 8-15 to place third in the contest.
Z-R-C had Brandy Mifflin, Rachael Grear, Chandra Weddle, and Chelsey Greenwood shooting three pointers. Brandy Mifflin finished second behind Hirsch with 9-15. Also qualifying was Chandra Weddle with 7-15 and finishing fourth.
Hirsch and Rice of DuQuoin and Mifflin and Weddle of Z-R-C will compete in the semi-finals on Wednesday evening.
Game 2 of the Regional will be played on Tuesday, February 7, at 6:00 with Sesser-Valier (#2) and Johnston City (#7) squaring off. Game 2 is at 8:10 with Benton (#3) and West Frankfort (#6) playing. Herrin and DuQuoin play on Wednesday evening at 6:00. The winners of Game 2 and 3 play at 8:10 on Wednesday. The Championship game is set for Friday, February 10 at 7:30 at Herrin.
