SOFTBALL: Kohrs homers twice, Lady Indians power past Goreville

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Du Quoin's early-season power surge showed no signs of slowing Tuesday as the unbeaten Lady Indians smacked around Goreville freshman hurler Sydnee Rushing in a 9-4 victory.

Jessica Hirsch scored four runs, including on a two-run homer, while Alexis Kohrs hit two home runs and was the winning pitcher for Du Quoin, which is now 5-0 while playing a tough schedule. Aubrey Davis had a pair of hits and drove in four runs.

"They can hit," said Goreville coach Shanna Massey. "They're pretty good. I told the girls it's early and it's better to get beat by a team like them now rather than someone else later. And hopefully we'll get to play them again."

Goreville, which knocked off Carterville in its opener last week in a battle of super-sectional qualifiers from last season, fell to 2-1.

Kohrs had nine strikeouts and was cruising with a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth when Goreville's Taylor Odom broke open the shutout with a moonshot homer to left field.

The Lady Blackcats added two unearned runs in the frame as Du Quoin's defense helped out with three errors. Ashlee Webb was credited with an RBI after a single set up by the miscues.

Odom homered again in the bottom of the seventh, but not until after Du Quoin tacked on three runs in the top of half including a solo shot by Kohrs.

Du Quoin's defense committed five errors while Goreville had only two in the game.

DHS head coach Jason James "was really pleased with the way we hit the ball today. Kohrs hit two home runs, and Hirsch added her second on the year. Kohrs pitched very well, giving up two home runs, but those were really the only two balls that were hit hard off her. I am a little disappointed in our defense. In the first five games of the season, we have made way to many errors. That is something that will have to be addressed. We either have to make the plays or have a seat--it is that simple."

Du Quoin had 11 hits in the contest. Hirsch (3B) was 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run and two RBI. Aubrey Davis (SS) was 2-3 with a double and four RBI. Cassidy Rice (CF) had an RBI on a sacrifice, Kohrs (P) was 2-4, both home runs and two RBI, Hadley Marek (1B) was 1-3, Hailey Stewart (2B) was 2-3 with a double, and Katrina Whitley (C) was 1-3 with a double.

Du Quoin has a home game on Wednesday (4:30) against West Frankfort. On Friday and Saturday, Du Quoin will be hosting an indoor tournament at the Southern Illinois Center where they meet Carmi at 6:00 p.m. A full schedule for the entire two-day event can be found on the scoreboard page.
