</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[It was a beautiful day for baseball on Monday as the DuQuoin Indian Baseball Team finally got to play on their new and fantastic field for the first time. Unfortunately, Vernon Hills did not cooperate to make it a great day, spoiling the park's debut for the home with a 12-7 victory.
The Indians played well enough to win the first game at The Ballpark at DuQuoin High School, but had one bad inning. Vernon Hills scored eleven runs in the fourth inning to win the game. DuQuoin scored two runs in the first inning, three in the third, and two runs in the fifth inning. Vernon Hills had four errors in the contest and DuQuoin only one.
The winning pitcher for Vernon Hills for Jay Miller. The Cougars had four different pitchers in the game. Brenden Fred was the losing pitcher for DuQuoin, who had three different pitchers in the game. A.J. Smith and Jon Boss also pitched for the Indians. Indian pitchers allowed 12 runs (2 unearned), 10 hits, had 4 strikeouts, 7 walks, and had one hit batter.
DuQuoin had 9 hits in the game. Fred was 2-5. Nate Boss was 1-5 with a foe run and two RBI. Dylan Pyron had a hit in the first inning, and left the game with an injury. Camden Youngman had a superb day at the plate going 3-3 including a triple and a walk plus 2 RBI. Travis Chapman was 2-3 with a walk. Jon Boss had an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Other Indians in the game were Kegan Robbins, Camdon Mercier, Howard Kelly, John Erwin, Garrett Dorsey, Jonah Spencer, and Austin Mansker.
Robbins was also injured during the game and may miss up to four weeks with a separated shoulder.
Coach Tim Craft commented, "I am disappointed that we lost, but I am not disappointed with the attitude and effort that the kids have shown. We had one bad inning. It is not really errors or anything like that. We hit the ball fairly well, but that one inning was hard to overcome. Our pitching is going to have to come around a little bit."
DuQuoin (0-2) plays at home on Wednesday with West Frankfort (4:30), and is again at home on Friday with Mt. Vernon. DHS is hosting a tournament on Saturday.
