DuQuoin's one run was scored in the third inning on a rather unusual play. DuQuoin's Jon Boss doubled to lead off the inning. Dylan Pyron attempted to sacrifice bunt him over. Carterville misplayed the bunt. No one covered third so Boss advanced. There was an overthrow at third, and Boss came home to score the lone, winning run for DuQuoin.
Austin Mansker was the winning pitcher for DuQuoin. Mansker allowed no runs, on 5 hits, had 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts.
DuQuoin had 4 hits in the game. Brenden Fred was 1-3, Nate Boss was 1-3, Travis Chapman was 1-3 and Jon Boss was 1-3 with a double. Other team members are Nathan Harris, Kegan Robbins, John Erwin, Jacob O'Rourke, Jonah Spencer, Dalton Bigham, Camdon Mercier, Noah Campbell, A.J. Smith, Camden Youngman, Buddy Smith, Jacob Valier, and Kody Hess.
Robbins was back on the infield for Du Quoin after missing several games with a separated shoulder.
The bottom of the seventh inning with Carterville at bat also had an unusual play. Carterville's Number 7 batter flied out to right. The Number 8 batter walked. The Number 9 batter had a 3-2 count on him, when he hit a foul ball down the third base line. Brenden Fred chased the ball down and made a miraculous catch. Fred then threw the ball to second base, and the Carterville runner was caught in a run down. Garrett Dorsey tagged him out to end the game.
Coach Tim Craft was overjoyed with the win. "Defensively it was a great game. Mansker did a great job of throwing strikes, and the defense did a great job behind him. Fred made a great catch to end the game. Jon Boss did a good job on the bases. We took advantage of their mistakes, and it paid off." Coach Craft is assisted by Jeromie Morgan, David Hopkins, and Cory Robbins.
DuQuoin travels to Steeleville on Wednesday, is at home with Pinckneyville (Conference) on Thursday, and hits the road to Harrisburg on Saturday.
