Carterville (14-7, 4-3) was coming off a huge win over previously-unbeaten Williamsville as part of the Southern Illinois Showcase after having Monday's road game at Nashville postponed until Wednesday.
Du Quoin scored twice in second inning and added four in the fourth en route to its 20th win of the season against just one loss. The Lady Indians now hold a 6-1 mark in the SIRR Mississippi and remain tied with Nashville atop the standings.
Hadley Marek singled with one out in the second and Magen Edwards drew a walk from Carterville hurler Nora Jacobs before Amanda Williams and Katrina Whitley both hit RBI singles.
Jacobs escaped further damage by getting Jessica Hirsch to line out and Aubrey Davis to ground out to first base, but was roughed in the first as the Lady Indians sent seven batters to the plate.
Edwards started it with a single. She scored on a triple by Whitley, who was brought home by a Davis single. Kelsey Robinson also singled and Cassidy Rice doubled to chase in two more runs and make it 6-0.
Whitley doubled and scored in the sixth, giving her three hits on the day. Robinson, who also had three hits, singled and scored on a hit by Edwards in the seventh. Rice and Edwards both had two hits.
Alexis Kohrs struck out eight and had just two hits and two walks allowed in the circle to improve to 10-1.
Both of Carterville's runs came in the sixth. Amy Drust walked and Carly Callahan singled. Drust scored on a groundout by Kylee Rock to break up the shutout.
Kaylin Dixon's single in the second inning was the only other hit against Kohrs, who struck out the other three batters she faced in that frame.
Du Quoin steps out of conference play on Wednesday with a road game at Steeleville before hosting arch rival Pinckneyville on Thursday.
DHS Coach Jason James said "Alexis pitched outstanding! We really hit the ball well today, with several kids coming up big today. The bottom three in our order just really came up big today! (Edwards, Williams, and Whitley)."
"We really came out today trying to get back to having fun, and I think that we accomplished that. Looking forward to see how we come out the rest of the week, but today was a very good day!"
For Du Quoin, Jessica Hirsch was 0-3 with a sacrifice and an RBI, Aubrey Davis was 1-4 with an RBI, Kelsey Robinson was 3-4, Cassidy Rice was 2-4 with a double, and two RBI, Alexis Kohrs was 1-4, Hadley Marek was 1-4, Magen Edwards was 2-3 with an RBI, Amanda Williams was 1-3 with an RBI and Katrina Whitley had a super day at the plate going 3-3, including two triples and two RBI. Kate Toler was the flex on defense.
Du Quoin (20-1, 6-1) travels to Steeleville on Wednesday, and is at home with Pinckneyville on Thursday. The Indians will participate in a tournament at O'Fallon on Friday and Saturday.
