SOFTBALL: Wilson shuts down Shawnee, EHS advances
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Corrine Wilson struck out the first six hitters she faced and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning as the Lady Falcons knocked out Shawnee 5-0 at the IHSA Class 1A Elverado Softball Regional on Monday in Vergennes.
"Corrine took control on the mound," said EHS head softball coach Donette Wheatley. "She didn't have a ball called on her until the fourth inning. Their first hit wasn't until the fifth. She has been very consistent for us all year."
Alicen Torres had two of the Lady Falcons' six hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of RBI. Kaitlin Lively and Tori Porter also drove in runs for Elverado.
"Tori Porter had a big catch in left for us, Kaitlin Lively had a big RBI," Wheatley said, adding "it wasn't the same people, other players stepped it up when we needed them to. They all contributed tonight, it was definitely a team effort."
Wilson mowed down her opposition through four, and in the bottom of the fourth she drew a leadoff walk at the plate before scoring on Torres' double for a 1-0 lead.
Three Lady Reds errors and a double by Wilson in the sixth set up Lively and Porter for their RBI as Elverado put up four runs in the frame.
"It's a big win for us," said Wheatley. "They came back in the sixth last year to beat us at the Steeleville Regional."
Torres (2-3, R, RBI), Wilson (1-2, BB, 2 R), Lively (1-3, RBI), Porter (1-3, RBI) and Kelsey Leland (1-2, R) each had hits in the game for the Lady Falcons.
Wilson allowed four hits, no walks and struck out ten.
Elverado (13-12) will meet top-seeded Goreville at 4:30 on Tuesday afternoon in the Regional semifinals. The winner moves on to Saturday's championship at 11:00 a.m.
