Du Quoin State Fair to Test Drive New Motocross Track This Weekend

"We anticipate a weekend of thrills and spills on this new track," said John Rednour, Jr., manager of the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds.
Construction of the track began a few weeks ago in anticipation of Memorial Day weekend events at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds. Tons of dirt was moved along a section of hilly terrain at the fairgrounds. The section chosen was not previously used for events.
"This is a great addition to the fairgrounds," Rednour said of the track. "There are a lot of motocross enthusiasts in Southern Illinois and the surrounding region and now they can watch their favorite sport on a major track made specifically for motocross racing."
At the outset the new track is getting mixed reviews from those who hold dear the pristine aesthetics of the lush grounds. Not so fast, says Rednour, on those quick to judge. He says the new track was excavated so it can quickly go back to the way it was after events. He said manure is part of the soil mix so that grass can be planted back into the hills. He points to the economic benefits of the new track. "We could have 300 riders this weekend which would bring 900 people to the grounds if you figure three per rider," he said. Host sponsor Doug Cochran will collect $10 per person for spectators and the fair charges a $20 camping fee. He said a larger September event could attract 2,000 riders "which winds up being an additional 6,000 people in Du Quoin."
He said if the fair can attract a large amateur national event to Du Quoin it could mean between 30,000 and 50,000 racing fans in Southern Illinois for race week.
Coming up is Memorial Day weekend.
In addition to motocross racing, there will also be a classic car show and demolition derby at the fairgrounds this weekend.
The classic car show is at 9 a.m. Sunday; the demo derby is at 5 p.m. Saturday; and motocross practice begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with racing at 10 a.m. on Sunday and Monday.
Camping spots are also still available at the fairgrounds for $20 a night. There are also fishing, hiking, and biking opportunities at the fairgrounds this weekend.
